Background Info on Spanish-speaking People

Hispanics are the fastest growing ethnic group in the U.S.

The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that 31.6 million people of Hispanic origin are living in the U.S. in 1999. Half were born in the U.S. and half were foreign-born. Hispanics make up 11.5 percent of the U.S. population.

The Census Bureau has also mapped where Hispanic Americans live.

Spanish is spoken by 275 million people in 19 countries worldwide.

The terms "Hispanic" or "Latino" include people of many races and countries of origin. The U.S. Census Bureau has compiled this list of Hispanic Countries of Origin. For more information, please look for specific people groups in our master indexes:

This graph is from the U.S. Census Bureau report, U.S. Hispanic Population 2000. Also new in March is Overview of Race and Hispanic Origin.

Hispanic Churches

One of the sponsors of Cumbre is A.M.E.N. (Alianza de Ministerios Evangelicos Nacionales), a multidenominational association of evangelical leaders (clergy and lay) from the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and Mexico.

We link to Hispanic church directories for Washington state, and for Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C. Please contact us if you have a list of Hispanic churches in your area, and we will publish the information here or link to your site.

Information for Churches

Perhaps you've noticed that a number of Spanish-speaking people have moved into your community. Your church would like to get acquainted with and serve these new families. But how can you begin?

The Jesus Film is a great way to share the gospel in the "heart language" of your new neighbors. Campus Crusade for Christ has produced this beautiful film of the gospel of Luke and translated it into over 600 languages, including Spanish. Your church can buy a video for less than $20 and sponsor a "Hispanic Night" to show the film and begin a dialogue. Ask Hispanic leaders in the community if they would like to see the film and if they'll help you invite other families.

To order the Jesus Film online, visit Jesusfilm.org. Or order by phone by calling Campus Crusade at 1-800-432-1997.

You can view the Jesus Film online in Spanish. (You will need to download the RealAudio Player, available free at the site.)

God's Story is an 80-minute video which presents the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. The video (and an audio version) are available in Spanish.

The International School of Ministry offers affordable bible training in Spanish . Their course in structured, taught by interdenominational Christian leaders, and available on audio tapes so your church can become a training center.

Christian reseacher, George Barna, has conducted surveys of American Hispanics. Among his findings: Hispanics attend church at about the same rate as other Americans but are less likely than average to call themselves “committed born again Christians” (29% of Hispanics compared to 39% of U.S. adults).

In "Conversation with Luis Palau" published by Pacific News Service, Argentinean Evangelist Luis Palau expresses his belief that Latinos are uniquely qualified to help bring racial reconciliation to the Body of Christ and share the gospel in the U.S.

In "Breaking the Black/White Stalemate," Jesse Miranda and William Pannell further discuss the Hispanic perspective on reconciliation and explain why racial reconciliation is not just a "black and white" issue. Article from Christianity Today, March 2, 1998 Vol. 42, No. 3, Page 26.

This quote from their web site captures the excitement we feel about the mission field in the U.S.,

"It seems the tremendous influz of Latin Americans into this country has brought a tremendous mission field into our very back yard, and who could be better equipped to minister to them than their own countrymen who have caught the vision of God to reach and evangelize the nations for His glory and honor!"
